Location

The proposed power station is located on land next to the Blythe Business Park, close to the A50 and the Derby-Stoke railway line.  The site is currently used for farming.

The site is in an ideal location for a gas-fired power station as it is within close proximity to the national gas and electricity transmission and distribution networks, as well as 10 km from Severn Trent Water’s Strongford Sewage Works which will provide the plant’s cooling water.

The power station will build upon Blythe Park’s industrial heritage. For over 140 years the adjoining site was a colouring factory for use in the region’s pottery and ceramic industries. Today, the Blythe Park Business Park is still home to business working in the colouring/dyes industry as well as a range of different enterprises who will be able to take power and heat directly from the power station.

Appearance

Blythe Park Power Station will be designed to minimize the visual impact on the local surroundings.  It will consist of two main units, each with a 55 m chimney stack although with the agreement of the local authority it should be possible to reduce this to 45 m. There will be no visible plumes from the plant’s chimney stacks or from the cooling towers under normal operations unlike the large coal fired power stations with the visible plumes from both their chimneys and their large hyperbolic cooling towers. The other parts of the station, including the main administrative building and a new 400kV substation (to transport the electricity into the National Grid) will be less than 30 m high.

Particular attention will be given to the visual appearance of all buildings and colour schemes will be chosen to blend in with the surroundings as well as appropriate landscaping planted to help further to reduce any visual impact.
